The “Dead Sea” is a very common destination when visiting Israel. It is the lowest point on planet earth, even below sea level. That means that the UV rays are not really a problem, you would probably not get a perfect tan there. Is this the perfect place for a fun filled family day? Definitely not! Think of it as a huge natural spa day! You won’t take your kids to the spa with you right???
The Water is saltier than the ocean. Its average salt concentration’s in the vicinity of 34 percent. As soon as you walk into any private compound at the beach they have many rules and regulations that you have to follow. There are many life guards on duty because of the dangers. No swimming, no splashing, no head under the water. No mud on the face (even thought people do it) no water in your eyes or mouth. There is no white sand, it’s a mixture of dark sand, earth and mud. Below are some of the issues:
- You can suffer from irritation if water gets into your eyes, throat, or any cuts and scrapes you might have. - Do not submerge your face underwater. - Do not get in the water if you have any healing wounds; even as small as a shaving cut. - A Dead Sea swim should be 25 minutes or less. - Prolonged immersion in salty water can cause dehydration. - Follow a rhythm of occasional brief dips interspersed with onshore relaxation. - You should also be aware sinkholes covered by mud. We saw a lady get stuck!
Definitely not a place for kids unless you decide to have fun at the many fresh water pools they have along the shore. That’s where most families and groups hang out at. With the many warning signs and regulations we decided not to let our kids get in. They did however enjoy all the amenities and parks at the other areas. You can even take a ride on a camel, they have them all around the shoreline.
One thing is for sure, when we left we felt our skin pulling from all sides, which means there was some sort of spa like treatment going on!
